SCR was founded in 1991 by Katie Merwick and her love of animals. She began by rescuing canines, but has since moved into equine rescue. Katie's passion is race horses, which is what she primarily works with now. Katie is a very accomplished woman who is an author, behaviorist, and recipient of the American Red Cross "2000, Hero of the Year" award.

The Grand Mound chapter is located at Rainbow Meadow Farm, 15 miles south of Olympia, Washington. The facility is situated on 80 beautiful acres and is an eventer's dream training location. From the 1/2 mile gallop track to the numerous cross country fences from Hopeful to Prelim, it is a wonderful spot for future eventer's to get their start.
